The national bird of New Zealand, the flightless Kiwi, inspired the naming of the country's inhabitants. Given that the name "kiwi" has its roots in Maori language, it was once used to describe them.
However, by 1917, soldiers from New Zealand were also called "Kiwi"! It is a source of pride for all New Zealanders that the phrase was adopted after World War II.
